STAYING WITH LIGHTNESS
The exhibition Staying with Lightness asks how one might remain within a fragile balance while embracing its many layers. The title relates to Staying with the Trouble by Donna Haraway, yet shifts the center of gravity toward lightness.
From the perspective of new materialism, the world is not divided into an active human subject and passive matter. Agency is dispersed, constantly colliding, repelling, and distributed. It circulates between surfaces, bodies, and processes. Matter does not simply carry meaning — it continuously produces it. Every print is a moment of transforming matter.
The artist and the material do not stand in opposition to one another; they emerge through relation, through co-activity. Ink seeps, disperses, leaves a trace. Paper receives, while simultaneously setting limits. Meaning is dynamic, always in motion.
This exhibition brings together the practices of several Estonian graphic artists connected through a shared studio. Rather than moving toward a single narrative, it forms a shared sensory field. Each work adds another layer, and each artist subtly shifts the whole.
Collective agency does not mean merging into one, but mutual influence. Meaning does not arise in isolation, but through relationships: between touch, materials, and the viewer.
Lightness is a fragile balance between different forces: pressure and texture, memory and disappearance, the individual and the collective — but also the desire to let these boundaries blur. It is the ability to remain within tension without breaking. A form of care that keeps the shared field open and transparent.
