rinnavähi teadvustamise kuul

At first, the answer seems simple. Pink is associated with tenderness, love, intimacy and femininity. Yet pink can also be powerful, contradictory, passionate, unsettling or painful. The same colour can carry entirely different meanings for different people.

October is internationally recognised as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the pink ribbon has become its universal symbol. But how much can a single colour truly express? Can pain be pink? What about courage, fear, anger, humour, desire or the will to live?

“What Colour Is Pink?” is not an exhibition about illness. It is an exhibition about life, the body and the contradictions of being human. Bringing together artists from Estonia and Finland, the exhibition explores different visual languages, materials and emotional perspectives. Painting, glass, sculpture and spatial installation reveal meanings of pink that extend far beyond conventional ideas of beauty and softness.

At its heart is the human body — simultaneously strong and fragile, changing and remembering. A body capable of pleasure and freedom, yet also a reminder of our vulnerability. Throughout the exhibition, intimacy meets confidence, tenderness meets resistance, and joy coexists with uncertainty. A pink cloud suspended within the gallery, with ribbons descending from it, transforms a familiar symbol into a spatial experience. It invites visitors to consider how a shared symbol can bring people together while never fully capturing the complexity of individual experience.

The exhibition offers no single answer, nor does it attempt to define what femininity, strength or beauty should look like. Instead, it creates space for different emotions, interpretations and perspectives. Perhaps pink has no single meaning. Perhaps, after leaving this exhibition, pink will never look quite the same again.

GALLERY K28 x ESTONIAN CANCER SOCIETY

The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Estonian Cancer Society (Eesti Vähiliit) and includes a charity auction. One of the Estonian Cancer Society’s key objectives is to make breast cancer screening accessible to women throughout Estonia. In cooperation with Viljandi Hospital, its mobile mammography unit brings screening services closer to women living in smaller towns and rural communities. The Estonian Cancer Society is currently raising funds for a new, advanced 3D mammography system for its mobile screening unit. This technology can help detect breast changes more accurately and at an earlier stage. Early detection can save lives. Alongside the artistic experience, the exhibition therefore aims to raise awareness of the importance of breast cancer screening and encourage support for the Estonian Cancer Society’s work.
