A Painting Exhibition by Karl-Erik Talvet
The exhibition “Spatula Landscapes” presents Karl-Erik Talvet’s landscape paintings created over recent years, offering viewers a different perspective on the artist’s practice.
Although Talvet is widely recognised for his military-themed works, inspired by his experiences in training exercises and during his mission in Mali, he has simultaneously developed a body of more abstract works and found space to explore the language of landscape painting.
Nearly all works in this exhibition were painted directly on location in nature. Yet rather than relying on naturalistic colours, Talvet intentionally uses a restrained and interpretive palette. Most notably, the paintings are created exclusively with palette knives instead of brushes, giving each work a rich texture and strong physical presence.
This freer and more expressive approach invites multiple interpretations, encouraging the viewer to reflect on the thoughts and emotions that may have accompanied the artist during the act of painting.
While some of the works carry a certain melancholic or even pessimistic undertone, Talvet also leaves space for a meaningful sense of hope — a quiet belief in the possibility of a better world during increasingly uncertain times.
